What the Social Security COLA Calculator Does
The COLA is an annual increase meant to protect benefits from inflation. It applies automatically to Social Security retirement, survivor and disability benefits, and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
The calculator helps you:
- Find your estimated 2027 monthly benefit
- See the increase in dollars per month and per year
- Plan a household budget for January 2027
- Compare your own increase with the national average
How to Use the Social Security COLA Calculator
The steps take under a minute. Keep your latest benefit statement or your most recent bank deposit record nearby.
- Enter your current monthly benefit amount before any deductions. This is the gross amount shown on your award letter or your my Social Security account.
- Confirm the COLA percentage. The tool uses 3.6 percent for 2027.
- Optionally, enter your monthly Medicare Part B premium if it is deducted from your check.
- Read the results: new monthly benefit, monthly increase and yearly increase.image tools
| Input | Where to Find It | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Current monthly benefit | Award letter or my Social Security account | $2,000 |
| COLA percentage | Pre-filled for 2027 | 3.6% |
| Medicare Part B premium (optional) | Your benefit letter or Medicare notice | Your own amount |
Use the gross benefit, not the amount that lands in your bank account. The deposit is usually smaller because premiums come out first.
The 2027 COLA Formula
The calculation uses simple multiplication.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Monthly increase | Current benefit x 0.036 |
| New monthly benefit | Current benefit x 1.036 |
| Yearly increase | Monthly increase x 12 |
For example, a benefit of $2,095 becomes about $2,170.42 a month, which is an increase of about $75.42. SSA applies its own rounding rules, so treat the tool result as a close estimate. Your official notice shows the exact figure.
2027 COLA Examples by Benefit Amount
The table below applies the 3.6 percent increase to common benefit levels.
| Current Monthly Benefit | Monthly Increase | New Monthly Benefit | Yearly Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $36 | $1,036 | $432 |
| $1,500 | $54 | $1,554 | $648 |
| $2,000 | $72 | $2,072 | $864 |
| $2,095 | $75.42 | $2,170.42 | $905 |
| $2,500 | $90 | $2,590 | $1,080 |
| $3,000 | $108 | $3,108 | $1,296 |
| $3,500 | $126 | $3,626 | $1,512 |
| $4,000 | $144 | $4,144 | $1,728 |
SSA reports that the average retirement benefit will rise by about $75 a month. Your own increase depends on your current amount.
Key Social Security Numbers for 2027
The COLA is not the only figure that changes. Several limits move at the same time.
| Item | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| COLA | 2.8% | 3.6% |
| Maximum taxable earnings | $184,500 | $192,300 |
| Earnings limit, under full retirement age | $24,480 | $25,560 |
| Earnings limit, year you reach full retirement age | $65,160 | $67,920 |
| SSI federal payment, individual | $994 | $1,029 |
| SSI federal payment, couple | $1,491 | $1,544 |
Two points matter if you work while collecting benefits:
- Under full retirement age, $1 is withheld for every $2 you earn above the lower limit.
- In the year you reach full retirement age, $1 is withheld for every $3 above the higher limit.
- After you reach full retirement age, the earnings limit no longer applies.
When the 2027 Increase Will Arrive
SSA sends notices first and the higher payments follow.
| Event | Timing |
|---|---|
| COLA notice online (my Social Security account) | Late November 2026 |
| COLA notice by mail | December 2026 |
| SSI recipients, first higher payment | December 31, 2026 |
| Social Security, birthday on the 1st to 10th | January 13, 2027 |
| Social Security, birthday on the 11th to 20th | January 20, 2027 |
| Social Security, birthday on the 21st to 31st | January 27, 2027 |
SSA says account holders can sign up for digital notices by November 18, 2026 to see the notice online up to three weeks before mail arrives. Beneficiaries who started before May 1997, or who also receive SSI, may be paid on different dates.
The COLA is automatic. You do not need to apply or register, and SSA does not call or text to activate it. Treat any message that says otherwise as a scam.
Why Your Deposit May Rise Less Than the COLA
Many people see a smaller increase than the calculator shows. The usual reasons:
| Factor | Effect on Your Check |
|---|---|
| Medicare Part B premium | Deducted from your benefit, often rising each year |
| Medicare Part D or Advantage deductions | May reduce the net deposit |
| Federal income tax withholding | Reduces the amount you receive |
| Rounding by SSA | Changes the final figure by a small amount |
The 2027 Part B premium is expected to appear in your my Social Security Message Center from late November. The standard premium for 2026 was $202.90. To estimate your real gain, subtract the premium increase from your monthly COLA increase.
COLA History The Last Seven Years
The 2027 adjustment is the largest since 2023.
| Year | COLA |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 1.3% |
| 2022 | 5.9% |
| 2023 | 8.7% |
| 2024 | 3.2% |
| 2025 | 2.5% |
| 2026 | 2.8% |
| 2027 | 3.6% |
The COLA is tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). SSA compares the average of July, August and September with the same period a year earlier.
Faq Social Security COLA Calculator
1. How much will my Social Security check increase in 2027?
Multiply your current gross monthly benefit by 0.036. A $2,000 benefit rises by $72 to $2,072. Your official amount will appear on your COLA notice.
2. Do I need to apply for the 2027 COLA?
No. The increase is automatic for Social Security and SSI beneficiaries. SSA never asks for payment or personal information to apply the COLA.
3. Why is my deposit lower than my new benefit?
Deductions such as Medicare premiums and tax withholding come out before the deposit. Your gross benefit rises by 3.6 percent, but the net amount can rise by less when premiums go up.
4. Does the COLA apply to SSI as well?
Yes. SSI uses the same 3.6 percent increase. The federal payment standard rises to $1,029 for an individual and $1,544 for a couple. Your actual SSI payment can be lower than the standard if you have other income.
